PRESS RELEASE
Parents Need to Double Efforts Teens see twice as much sex today, just by turning on the television in their own homes. So says a recent study by the Kaiser Foundation, which scrutinized 1,000 shows and found nearly 4,000 scenes had sexual content, more than double the number from the 1998 study. Nearly 70 percent of all shows averaged about five sex scenes per hour. It was concern for their own seven children about messages sent by the media—that sex without a long-term relationship is okay, that violence is a way to handle problems, that women can be treated with disrespect, that money is more important than morality—that prompted 2001 California Parents of the Year, Brent and Phelecia Hatch to look for ways to teach and guide their children. What they have learned and implemented in their own home, along with the ideas they have gleaned from countless interviews and consultations with other parents is working. They have raised seven morally responsible children who have learned how to make decisions based on their own core values and who aren’t afraid to take a stand for what they feel is right. The Hatches have also taught others to do the same. In workshops, where they focus on positive parenting, effective communication, setting reasonable rules, and, most of all, demonstrating affection and acceptance, Brent and Phelecia have passed their ideas to many grateful parents, educators and counselors. Published by Greentree Publishing in Tempe, Arizona, the book will be available in bookstores across the country April 1, 2006. To be notified when the book is available, or to find out about having Brent or Phelecia present a workshop in your area, contact Cecily Markland at Greentree Publishing by calling (480) 838-4309 or e-mailing: cecilygreentree@earthlink.net.
